ISMS Provides Guidance on Medical Records
In 2016, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released new guidelines concerning an individual's access to protected health information (PHI).
What that means for you and your practice's record release process is that there are updated methods for calculating copy fees, and clearer timeliness expectations. Most important to know: Practices should not charge a per-page fee when records are going to a patient or their personal representative.
To help you better understand the HHS guidance in the context of Illinois law, ISMS updated the 2016 Medical Record Quick Guide, a handy one page reference. Find out what patients and others can be charged currently for copies of medical records, and how long records should be retained.
